Today you and I are going to learn how to relax and bring God’s word into our hearts. We are going to ask for peace and rest in our mind and spirit. Relaxation is therapeutic and when done with God’s word it helps us to allow it deeply in our spirit, vanishing the busyness of our lives.
First, we are going to learn how to relax our muscles through proper breathing, then we will meditate in His word, understanding how deep and high his love is for us. Meditation simply means focused thinking. And soon we will meditate on how God has chosen us, how belonging to Him and being His possession frees us to live peacefully and with contentment.
Close your eyes… Get in a comfortable position in comfortable clothes, dim the lights and relax your body. Stretch your legs or lie down, make sure the temperature is pleasant and there will be no interruptions.
Psalms says: May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you. And…Peter says: Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Together we are going to learn how to breathe deeply, calming our body, allowing our body to replenish its oxygen.
Let your mind clear, and feel the calmness. As a thought comes, don’t fight it, just let it go Place one hand over your chest and the other on your stomach. Our breathing should be felt through our abdomen. Our chest should be still. As we breathe through our diaphragm we are deeply breathing and replenishing our body of much needed oxygen Take a deep breath through your nose all the way down to your stomach. Hold, and let go through your mouth… Again, breathe in through your nose, 1, 2,… out through your mouth… 2, 3, 4. We are purposely slowing our breathing down. One more time, breathe in, 1, 2,… breathe out… 2, 3, 4 Continue breathing deeply, Relax your body, and listen to what the Lord has to say: If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come. And Deuteronomy says: You are a holy people, who belong to the Lord your God. Of all the people on earth, the Lord your God has chosen you to be his own special treasure.
I know that I am also your special treasure, because You tell me in Thessalonians: We know, dear brothers and sisters, that God loves you and has chosen you to be his own people. Lord, it is my joy to belong to You. Being Yours, I know that You will care for me better than I can care for myself. King David also understood this when he wrote in Psalms: What joy for the nation whose God is the Lord, whose people He has chosen as His inheritance.
And Psalm says: He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. When I look in the night sky, and I see the many stars you placed there, I can’t help but trust that You will also guide my life and direct me in a successful path. That You are able to accomplish all the good plans that You have for my life. I want my life to prove to all what a good God You really are. “In John You say: you did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.” It comforts me to know that You are in complete control of my life as I submit to Your perfect will. When I first surrendered to You, it came as little surprise that it was You pursuing me, and I find it comforting to know that You love me so much that You would pursue me, that you chose me for eternal life. I want to be pleasing to You, I want to know what good works you have planned for me to do to help build up your church, to bless You by blessing other people. I know some of these people are not even submitted to You yet, but they will be, because You have chosen them, and the Father has given them to You, just as You said in John: “Father, I have revealed You to those whom You gave Me out of the world. They were Yours; You gave them to Me and they have obeyed Your word. Now Lord, I ask You the same thing, please show me who You want me to bless, the people You want me to reflect Your love to. Just as you made the moon to shine the light of the sun on to a dark world, let me be like that light that will help those You have chosen, who You have called out of darkness and into Your wonderful light, to see what good things you have planned for their lives. Lead me by Your Holy Spirit, You also say in John: All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. You say that we have not received a spirit that makes us fearful slaves, instead we have received Gods Spirit when He adopted us as His children. Now we call You “daddy” because Your Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. And since we are Your kids, we are also heirs of Your great glory, but that glory will cause some to hate us and we will suffer for it. But that suffering will be nothing compared to the glory You will reveal to us, and in us, later. And all of creation has suffered because of man’s sin, but You will someday break that curse of sin and release our bodies from suffering and give us the new bodies You have promised. We are given this hope when we are saved, and we know You will do it. Until then Your Holy Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony will the Father’s good will. You Also say in John: “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them. For God knew his people in advance, and He chose them to become like His Son, so that His Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And having chosenthem, He called them to come to Him. And having called them, He gave them right standing with Himself. And having given them right standing, He gave them His glory.”
When I look at Your creation, I see so much beauty in it. The way the seasons change, the delicate young flowers that push up from the soil in the spring, the leafy trees that slowly grow and take hold of the earth to provide us shelter and shade on warm summer days. Then in the fall, when the nights are cold, these same leaves turn beautiful shades of red, and orange, and yellow. Soon they cover the ground like a soft orange blanket preparing for winter. As winter falls, though bare and seemingly lifeless, these same trees will then display icy prisms of light on winter days, as a promise of more summer days yet to come. As beautiful and awesome as this circle of life and death is, I know that Your creation was not intended to suffer through it. John also says in Revelation: Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. You will make a new heaven with all new stars that exist in harmony, and a new earth, where there is no longer any death. We will be living with You in this new paradise because our names will be found written in the book of life. I also know that all of creation will be restored as You originally intended, every single species of plant and animal, even more than we ever imagined. This is what You meant when You said in John: “we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us. We were given this hope when we were saved.”
When I look back over my life, during the time when I was chosen by You and did not yet know it. I realize that many times Your hand protected me and kept me from death and destruction. And though I don’t understand why some live and die tragically, I do know that You are able to take the things of life and death and make something beautiful out of it, because I see it in Your handiwork, in Your creation every day. Even though I am in this world, I do not want to be like it. I know that some people will hate me for not being like them, but they also hated You for the same reason. But while I am in this world, I know that You can protect me from anyone who hates me for loving You. Set me apart for the good work you have planned for me and let me live in Your truth so others may follow me as I follow You. And as I follow You I know that my life will be good because You Lord, are good.
